Cardiff City Supporters Trust urge FA and Premier League to 'go further to protect the identity of football clubs'

Two years after their controversial rebrand, Cardiff City's Supporters Trust have demanded FA approval for future changes to colours and crests.

Cardiff City Supporters Trust have written to the football authorities to request rule changes to protect club's identities - after Hull City's proposed name change was scrapped.

Prior to last week's match against Liverpool, thousands of Bluebirds fans protested about owner Vincent Tan's 2012 colour change to red as they bid to return their club's colours and crest back to blue and white.

Days earlier, the FA Membership Committee revealed they will recommend that the FA Council reject an application by Hull owner Assem Allam to change the name  from City to Tigers, after he failed to convince a working group of fans and stakeholders that his plan would benefit the game.

The final decision in that case will be made by the FA Council on Wednesday, April 9.

But as the committee consider their decision, Cardiff City's Supporters Trust have written to the FA, Premier League and Football League asking for more, saying: “We believe football must go further to protect the identity of clubs for the sake of the integrity of clubs themselves and of the wider game.”

After a poll of their members overwhelmingly directed the Trust to fight to restore the club's identity, they have put the following two proposals to the governors of the British game:

1) That changes to club colours and crests should require formal FA approval.

2) That clubs that want to bring in such changes should have the proposal subject to a formal, independently verifiable and recognise process of approval on the part of supporters, and approved by the FA.

In the letter, chairman Tim Hartley said: “The Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust would be happy to meet you or your representatives to discuss our ideas for ensuring that some valuable lessons are learned from this incredibly sorry episode and that fans are treated fairly and respected by club owners.”

Cardiff City Captain Out For The Season

CARDIFF CITY captain Mark Hudson has been ruled out for the remainder of the Premier League season due to a hamstring injury.

The central defender, 31, injured his leg in the Welsh outfit's loss at Manchester United in late January, and his second league match for the 2013-14 campaign would be his last.

"Yes unfortunately I am out for the rest of the season. The hamstring injury at Man U was worse than first thought," Hudson revealed via Twitter.

It is further injury heartbreak for Hudson after undergoing ankle surgery in March last year.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: "He has had a very bad hamstring injury but we will get him back for next year."

Solskjaer also said defensive midfielder Gary Medel will be out for a fortnight, in another blow to Cardiff's prospects of avoiding relegation.

However, in positive news for the club, defender Kevin McNaughton has signed a one-year contract extension.

Cardiff City boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brushes off rivalry with Swansea City, saying: 'We are the capital city'

Cardiff City manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has claimed that his new club are destined for big things - and made light of any potential Premier League fight with their Welsh rivals.

Although Swansea City currently occupy 15th position in the Premier League table, one positive for the club’s fans amid the growing fears over a relegation battle will be that they sit five positions and three points ahead of bottom-placed Cardiff City.

However, despite Cardiff’s perilous position, Solskjaer believes that his partnership with controversial club owner Vincent Tan can propel Cardiff into the top half of the table, and brushed off the importance of the rivalry between the two Welsh Premier League clubs.

“Of course we have Swansea to challenge with, but we are the capital city”, Solskjaer said.

“Our aim is to be a top 10 club in the medium to long term and build from there. Vincent Tan is a winner who wants all his businesses to be successful and in the short-term it’s important we stay in the Premier League.

“When I say top 10 that’s in the medium to long term and who knows in the long, long term?”

The second South Wales derby of the Premier League era takes place at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday, February 8.
